RIP Nodar Kumaritashvili

February 12, 2010

The games have begun and they start in tragedy; Georgian luger, Nodar Kumaritashvili, flew off the track in Whistler at peak speed and smashed into a metal girder. He was rushed to the hospital but the injuries were too severe, he has passed away.

At the time of the crash, it was estimated his speed was 144.3 km/hr. Kumaritashvili is seen below mere moments before the tragic accident.

Kumaritashvili was 21 years old. We wish his family and friends the deepest sympathy.

Let's hope the rest of the games go much safer and happier!

Nodar Kumaritashvili’s death is a tragedy! Luge looks like such a neat sport, but also very dangerous at the same time. His death will cast a pall over these Olympic Games. RIP
