Beth's Top 5 Olympic Moments!

In no particular order, here are my top 5 Vancouver 2010 moments!

1. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir winning gold, and then seeing the rings change to gold!


2. Being in Whistler and being able to take this amazing picture:


3. The Peak to Peak Gondola between Blackcomb and Whistler Mountains.


4. Sitting in Pacific Coliseum before the Figure Skating Gala and getting really emotional because I know the Olympics are coming to an end and it's been an amazing trip!


5. Team Canada Men's Hockey winning Gold and seeing how happy Scott is!!!

AMAZING TRIP!!!!!!!!!!!!! We're considering Sochi 2014 :)

Joannie Rochette wins Bronze & Women's Hockey wins Gold!

Great few days for Canada! Yesterday 4 medals, today, 2!!!

We went to the Women's Gold Medal Hockey game, Canada vs. USA. Canada won 2-0!!!

After the game, Pam, Jen, Scott and I went to a gay bar called The Score to meet up with Scott Dumas and Damonde Tschritter (Yuk's comedians) to watch the women's long program!! I was very nervous for Joannie, but she rose above everything and had an amazing skate!! I'm so proud of her, as is Canada!! And now I will get to see her skate at the Gala on Saturday!

Canadian Figure Skating Championships - Day 4

Men's Long Program

Kevin Reynolds who was in 5th going into the long program just had a fantastic skate! 2 quads and no real glaring errors! Great skate for him! I hope he's about to squeeze out at least 3rd!

TOTAL - 216.49

Joey Russell

3rd after the short program. He's a very artistic skater, far more so than Chipeur or Chan. Triple axle - okay, a little wild on the landing, triple flip - decent enough, triple lutz - great!, triple lutz - he doubled and then did a double toe on the end. Triple flip - double toe combo - alright, triple sow- triple toe - great, double axle, double axle (again). I don't think that program will beat Kevin Reynolds... it shouldn't at least... but who knows with judges.

TOTAL - 202.16

He didn't beat Kevin, he's in 3rd currently with Chipeur and Chan to still skate!!

2nd after the short program. He had such a great short program, his margin from 3rd to 2nd is quite a bit.

Triple axle - HUGE but a little messed up on the end, triple flip - triple toe - GREAT! Triple lutz - great, triple loop - perfect, double axle (it was really REALLY huge, he should have tripled it, wussed out.) Triple sow - perfect, double axle, triple lutz - double toe. I think he should stay in 2nd. (Once Chan skates that is)

TOTAL - 222.10

1st after the short program.

Let's see if he can handle the pressure. He's skating to Phantom of the Opera, how very 1997 of him. :) wait... he was 7 in 1997. That makes me feel old.

Triple axle - stepped out of the landing, triple flip - triple toe - put his hand down on the landing of the triple toe. Triple lutz - perfect, triple axle - double toe - perfect, triple lutz - double toe - double loop - GREAT COMBO! triple loop - great, triple sow - perfect, double axle. Great skate, he's got the gold again for sure!

TOTAL - 268.02 (New Canadian Record!)

That's 45.92 over 2nd place!!! WOW!!

O'Canada! Stevie Y's edition of Team Canada.

It's a job many would love to have, but a responsibility few could handle with the skill and grace of Steve Yzerman - the role of executive director for Team Canada, charged with selecting the Men's Olympic hockey team. Today, months of speculation ended, and 6 weeks of second guessing commenced, as the Men's Olympic Hockey Team was unveiled at a press conference in Saskatoon. Team Canada was even a trending topic on Twitter today - testament to the number of people in our country who are passionate about hockey and the Olympic games!

Team Canada contained only a few surprises, with goaltenders a lock for several months with Cam Ward injured and Steve Mason playing poorly, and experienced players like Niedermayer, Iginla and Pronger surefire picks for Vancouver 2010 - there was little room to play your way onto the team.

However, Patrice Bergeron did just that - playing his way onto the team with a stellar first half with the Bruins, although it probably helped that he's played with Crosby before at the '05 World Juniors. While many have labeled him the 13th forward, he may end up on Canada's first line with Crosby and Nash. Look out goaltenders everywhere! Twenty-year-old Drew Doughty was the big surprise on defence, although he's already drawing comparisons with Ray Bourque from Bob McKenzie, his skill level was never in question. While Doughty is lacking in senior international experience, Doughty is the future of Team Canada's D-core, so this pick makes sense to allow him to lead a no-Niedermayer, no-Pronger team in 2014. Much the chagrin of my friends here in Calgary, Jay Bouwmeester was bumped to allow the inclusion of Doughty. J-Bo has averaged the most minutes of any NHL player, can move the puck quickly, hit hard and quarterback the powerplay - that a player like him is left off speaks to the immense depth of talent that Mr. Yzerman and co. had to choose for this team. Who knows - maybe one of the top 7 D-men get injured in the next couple weeks, and J-Bo gets a chance to show what they missed by not picking him?

I can't say I disagree with any of Hockey Canada's picks for the Olympic games - and I'm sure looking forward to seeing these players suit up together in 6 weeks time. The criticism that Stevie Y will have to face if this team doesn't win gold is immense, but I think he's picked the right team to go all the way! Go Canada Go!
